I doubt many would argue if I said that the greatest entry motorsports have made into mainstream culture is through the Monster Jam event tour. Whether they’ve ever actually attended an event or not, most people are familiar with the sight of Grave Digger, Batman, Maximum Destruction, or another truck rumbling over a dirt ramp. And who can forget the reminder that “Kids’ seats are still just five bucks!”?Monster Jam was part of the Live Nation motorsports division, which was purchased by Feld Entertainment in September 2008. The first event was held in 2000, and has always culminated in March with the Monster Jam World Finals, held at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main event of Monster Jam is racing and freestyle monster truck competitions. In freestyle, the monster truck drivers perform stunts off of various parts of the track, although some obstacles may be added or removed to make the stunts even more thrilling. At the Monster Jam World Finals, champions are chosen in each of these categories. In 2010, Grave Digger, driven by Dennis Anderson, defeated Maximum Destruction to take its third championship title (after previously winning in 2006 and 2004). Meanwhile, Monster Mutt, driven by Charlie Pauken, took the Freestyle win for the first time with a stunning 39 points. The only truck to get a higher score in the event’s history was Grave Digger in 2000, which brought in 40 points. The evidence of Monster Jam’s popularity can also be seen in the associated licensed products. The Monster Jam TV show has aired on the Speed Channel since 2003. Toy versions of the trucks are released through the Hot Wheels brand, owned by Mattel. Finally, five video game titles have been released under the brand name, starting with 2002′s Monster Jam: Maximum Destruction, in which players duel each other in demolition-derby-style matches. The most recent game, Monster Jam: Path of Destruction, will release in November in North America. Developed by Activision, the game features 30 official trucks, as well as an exclusive Grave Digger Steering Peripheral for the Playstation 3 and Wii to make the game even more authentic.
